Focused Community Strategies: 2020 Annual Report
Summary
Though Dresden Design has worked with Focused Community Strategies for years, this project was different than normal. We needed to capture the story and statistics of the work happening in South Atlanta during a very tumultuous but unifying year: 2020. Through art and through words, this annual report tells of navigating a global pandemic amidst fighting against racial injustice - even in their own backyard - while still carrying on the work FCS has been committed to for more than 40 years.

To visually capture its dichotomy between beauty and brutality, we implemented a high contrast, black-and-white system throughout the piece along with sharp cutting lines and small elements of color mingled throughout an otherwise colorless landscape.
Photos vary between color, black and white, and some even have elements of each. Images are segmented, spliced together, or feature abrupt angles. All of this visually communicates the tension and extremes - beauty and brutality - that 2020 held.
The brand’s usually colorful, almost playful palette took the back burner to match the more somber tone of a 2020 recap. Instead, our team leaned into their other brand elements to keep the report on brand while also letting this be a standout piece.
As is with many humanitarian organizations and nonprofits like FCS, the people are one of the strongest features of every piece. The organization may provide the structure to accomplish the work but the individuals are at the heart of the work.
The photos in this booklet often focus on just one or two subjects. Individuals doing the work. Individuals impacted by the work. They distributed food, masks, and Chrome books. They organized community work outs, protest cleanup, and racial justice walks.

Finally, we also designed a custom email template for the report since the standard, more colorfully branded FCS templates didn’t match the tone of the piece. This template allowed for specific stories and sections to be highlighted giving a taste of what the annual report contained.
